Oaks Christian’s Wes Smith captured his first Division IV boys title since 2006 and added the program’s first girls championship to produce the sweep for the Lions.

ALL-AREA BOYS ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

DAVID MANAHAN, Harvard-Westlake, Sr.

Not only did Manahan run the fastest 800-meter race in school history to win the state title, he needed every hundredth of a second to become the Wolverines’ first male athlete to capture a state championship in any event.

Manahan completed his mission following an injury-plagued junior season by winning the championship June 7 in 1 minute, 51.04 seconds, edging Clovis’ Connor Morello (1:51.05) with a well-timed lean at the finish line.

Harvard-Westlake became the sixth school in state history to produce boys and girls 800 state champions, with Amy Weissenbach winning three in a row from 2010-12. Manahan also matched Weissenbach’s achievement of sweeping Southern Section Division III, Masters and state titles.

Manahan, who had the top 800 time in California and 17th nationally, extended Harvard-Westlake’s run of producing at least one state champion to five consecutive years. He also became the area’s first boys 800 champion since Westlake’s Cory Primm in 2006-07.

COACH OF THE YEAR

WES SMITH, Oaks Christian

Not only did the Lions capture their second Division IV boys crown, they enjoyed the most impressive day in program history May 24 by capturing the girls championship as well at Cerritos College to produce their first sweep under Smith and his staff. Although the girls enjoyed several victories to propel them past St. Mary’s Academy, Oaks Christian’s boys relied on Michael Seaton’s victory in the 100-meter dash and depth to get past Serra and capture their first title since 2006.

NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR

KYLAN WILBORN, Notre Dame, Fr.

He continued the tradition of strong throwers mentored by Knights coach Nick Garcia, ranking second among all ninth-graders in the state and seventh nationally among freshmen in the shot put with a mark of 53-11 1/2 at the Mission League final, helping Notre Dame sweep the top five spots. Wilborn had four meets with 50-foot efforts, including a mark of 50-3 1/2 to finish 11th at the Division III prelims, just missing a chance to join teammates Aaron Haigler, Deion Dayao and Austin Swanson in the final.

FIRST TEAM

Idrees Bernard, Agoura, Sr.

One of the most versatile jumpers in the state, Bernard won the Division II triple jump title with a season-best leap of 48-4 ¾, before placing seventh at the state final. Bernard, also the Ventura County and Marmonte League champ, long jumped 23-1/2 to place fourth in the Division II final.

Alex Billing, Simi Valley, Jr.

A breakthrough season was capped with a third-place finish in a wind-legal 14.01 seconds in the state 110-meter hurdles final. Billing, who captured the Ventura County, Marmonte League and Division II titles in the 110 hurdles, also ran the 300 hurdles, 100-meter dash and was a long jumper.

Zack Bornstein, Oaks Christian, Sr.

One of the country’s elite decathletes, the UCLA-bound Bornstein was also instrumental in the Lions winning the Division IV title, taking third in the 110-meter hurdles and shot put, along with second in the discus. Bornstein placed 10th in the Masters discus, then overcame injury to win the Great Southwest Classic decathlon.

TJ Brock, Chaminade, Soph.

Despite a false start in the Mission League 100-meter dash prelims derailing his pursuit of postseason glory, Brock showed significant improvement in the 200 to win the Division III title in a season-best 21.13 and place fourth in the state. He also ran a season-best 10.61 in the 100 at the Mt. SAC Relays.

Nathan Bultman, West Ranch, Jr.

The area’s most consistent thrower placed sixth in the state in the shot put with a mark of 58-10 ½. Bultman produced 60-foot efforts in three postseason meets, winning the Division I title after a season-best 62-4 in the prelims. Bultman was third in the Masters meet (61-3 ¾).

Luigi Colella, Thousand Oaks, Sr.

The defending state pole vault was one of 12 athletes nationally to clear 17 feet, producing a lifetime-best effort of 17-3/4 to win the Southern Section Division II title. Colella, also the Ventura County and Marmonte League champion, was second at the Masters meet based on attempts.

Dominic Davis, Alemany, Jr.

The Division III champion in the 100-meter dash, Davis placed fourth at the state final in a wind-aided 10.51, just off his season-best 10.47 at the Mt. SAC Relays in April. Davis, who helped Alemany tie for second at the Division III final, had a season-best 21.48 in the 200.

Jamire Jordan, Highland, Sr.

An all-around scoring threat, Jordan reached the state finals in multiple events. Jordan clocked 14 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles in the state prelims and placed eighth in the state long jump final. His season-best 24 2 ¾ won the Division I long jump title. Jordan also ran the 100 and cleared 6-6 in the high jump.

Ahmed Obed, Camarillo, Sr.

After being sidelined last year with a hamstring injury, Obed won the Division title in the 100 and took second in the 200, clocking a season-best 21.07. He placed fourth in the Masters 200 and sixth in the state. Obed’s best 100 time was 10.66.

Brian Zabilski, Saugus, Jr.

The Foothill League 3,200 champion delivered one of the great individual efforts of the season when he clocked a program-record 8:59.98 to place third in the Masters meet. Zabilski, who placed 12th in the state in the 3,200, also clocked 4:14.22 in the league’s 1,600 final.

RACE OF THE YEAR

State 800-meter championship, June 7

Although Saugus’ Brian Zabilski breaking the 9-minute barrier in the 3,200 at the Southern Section Masters meet was an historic achievement of its own, the drama produced by Harvard-Westlake’s David Manahan winning the 800 title was hard to match. Manahan separated himself from the pack with 150 meters remaining and appeared on his way to a convincing win, before Clovis’ Connor Morello produced a late surge in an effort to run him down. Manahan was able to hold off Morello 1:51.04 to 1:51.05 at the finish, becoming the fifth area male runner to capture an 800 state crown.
